Eggnog is a traditional Christmas drink with a frothy texture. The beverage can be made with distilled spirits such as brandy, rum, whisky and bourbon. Eggnog dates back to the 1600s, when ‘nog’ was a strong beer brewed in East Anglia. The word could also stem from ‘noggin’ which was a small wooden mug used to serve alcohol in the Middle Ages. The drink is still extremely popular today, so why not give it a go? Express.co.uk talks you through BBC’s eggnog recipe.
How to make eggnog
This recipe serves 12 people and takes less than half an hour to prepare.
If you don’t want to use regular eggs, you could use pasteurised egg whites which are available to buy in a carton.
- 6 medium free-range eggs (preferably organic and as fresh as possible), separated
- 150g/5½ oz golden caster sugar
- 500ml/18fl oz whole milk
- 400ml/14fl oz double cream
- 350ml/12fl oz rum, bourbon or a mixture of the two, depending on your preference
- freshly grated nutmeg, to taste

Whisk the egg yolks in a bowl with 100g/3½ oz of the caster sugar until the mixture is pale yellow and thick
This is best done with an electric handheld mixer, but you could do it with a regular whisk or spoon.
Stir in the milk, double cream, and the alcohol of choice.
You can add a little grated nutmeg as well, dependent on tastes.
Pour the mixture into two 750ml/1½ pint bottles with stoppers and store in the fridge for up to two weeks.
Don’t worry about the eggs going back and ruining the drink, the alcohol will prevent any spoilage of the eggs or cream.
Place the egg whites in a box and freeze until ready to serve the eggnog.

When ready to serve, defrost the egg whites into a clean metal or glass bowl.
Using a handheld electric mixer, whisk the egg whites until foamy and opaque.
Add the remaining 50g of sugar and whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form when the whisk is removed.
Pour the eggnog from the bottles into a large bowl and fold in the egg whites until well combined.
Ladle the eggnog into glass tumblers and serve with a little freshly grated nutmeg over the top of each glass.
Can eggnog be vegan?
You can make vegan eggnog, you just need to switch a few ingredients out.
- 25g pitted dates
- 25g cashew nuts
- 25g dried apricots
- ¼ tsp mixed spice
- 100ml brandy
- 1 vanilla pod, seeds only
- 1l sweetened almond milk
- ice, to serve
- nutmeg, to serve
Soak the dates, cashews, apricots and mixed spice in the brandy overnight.
The next day, tip the mixture into a blender and add the seeds from the vanilla pod and the almond milk.
Blitz until smooth, then pour into eight tall glasses (use a sieve, if you like) with ice and grate some nutmeg on top.
