A Michigan produce company is recalling nearly 2,300 cases of fresh apples for possible listeria contamination. 

North Bay Produce said the recall affects branded bags of Red Delicious, McIntosh, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Jonathan and Jonamac apples in non-branded white and plastic bags. 

The six apple varieties were shipped to six states—Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin—between October 16 and 21.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious illness in young children, elderly people, and other people with weakened immune systems. However, healthy people can also be affected. 

Symptoms of infection include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, as well as miscarriage and stillbirth among pregnant women. 

The recall is a result of a test that revealed products contained the bacteria, the company said in a statement, but there have been no reported illness related to the apples so far. 

Apples purchased before October 16th are not affected by the recall.

If you have an affected product, the company said, do not consume it. Throw it away or return it to the store where it was purchased immediately.
