The Queen reportedly loves a Dubonnet cocktail, which is commonly referred to as a Zaza when served over ice. The Dubonnet cocktail was created in the 1840s as a way to make Quinine, a medication used to treat malaria, more palatable for French Foreign Legion Troops. The Dubonnet Cocktail surfaced in Britain in the early 1900s.

It came about as Dubonnet is quite bitter when consumed on its own, however, pairs nicely with gin.

Known as the Zaza when served over ice, the Dubonnet Cocktail has become a favourite of Queen Elizabeth II.

It was also a favourite of the Queen Mother’s.

The Queen reportedly likes hers with two ice cubes on top of a slice of lemon.

Gordon’s gin has a Royal Warrant which would be a perfect choice if you want to be particularly regal.

It was previously reported she has a Dubonnet Cocktail every day before lunch, however former royal chef, Darren McGrady, refuted this claim.

Darren told CNN: “She’d be pickled if she drank that much.

“All I said was she likes a gin and Dubonnet.

“That’s her favourite drink.”

For the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next year, royal fans will want to know how to make the Queen’s favourite cocktail to celebrate.

The classic Dubonnet cocktail is also not very difficult to make.

It is a cocktail staple that can be found at most alcohol stores in the UK and is served at all royal residences across the UK.


Two oz Dubonnet
One oz Gordon’s Gin – the Queen’s favourite
Lemon twist


Add a few ice cubes to a mixing glass.

Then, pour in the Dubonnet and gin.

The measurements should be two parts Dubonnet to one part gin.

Mix gently and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Garnish with the lemon twist and enjoy.

You can also add a few more ice cubes with the lemon twist to your cocktail.

It is a very strong drink, made entirely with alcohol with no mixers at all, similar to a Negroni.

According to Darren, the Queen likes to have a drink with her dinner, and when she is celebrating she likes to do so with her favourite tipple, the Dubonnet cocktail.

The Dubonnet cocktail is also traditionally served on Christmas Eve at Sandringham when the Royal Family have their black-tie evening event before Church the following morning.
