You know that ice you get at certain fast food restaurants that puts every other piece of ice you’ve ever had in your life to shame? You know—that ice. The chunky, pillowy, crunchy, stuff sent straight from heaven.
Most people simply call it “the good ice,” but apparently it has a name: nugget ice. Once only available at Sonic, Zaxby’s, and other fast food favorites, you can now enjoy nugget ice in the comfort of your very own home.
We missed it somehow, but apparently the Opal Nugget Ice Maker was released a few years ago after a successful crowdfunding effort.

This baby is straight out of an ice lover’s dreams: This 3-pound beauty holds up to 2.5 quarts at a time and it produces one pound of ice per hour.
Opal uses a special process to create those little ice nugs we all know and love.
“Traditional ice makers freezes water into a hard ice cube,” the website states. “Opal nugget ice is made by scraping the ice flakes off the inside of a chilled stainless steel cylinder. The flakes are extruded through a round hole, compacting them into chewable nuggets similar to a snowball.”
Unfortunately, good ice doesn’t come cheap. The Opal Nugget Ice Maker will set you back about $500, a shockingly low price compared to similar (albeit larger) nugget ice makers that cost thousands.
But can you even put a price on good ice? (The answer is yes—and it’s $500).
