Mary shared her tips while appearing in a ‘Get Baking’ segment for BBC Children in Need in 2010.
To begin, budding bakers should preheat their oven to 180C, or 160C fan.
She stated: “Making a Victoria sandwich is very simple, particularly if you use the ‘all in one’ method.
“This means putting all the ingredients at once into the bowl and giving it a good beat.”
First, the baking legend cracked the eggs into the bowl, followed by the sugar and the self-raising flour.
When discussing the self-raising flour she stated she would not sieve it. Mary added: “I find there’s no need to.”
Next, Mary added the baking powder and the butter before mixing the ingredients together.
She continued: “Mix it until the ingredients are all combined. You know when you’ve got to the right consistency when there’s no surplus flour round the outside of the bowl and there’s no fatty bits. Don’t overmix it.”
Once fully combined, Mary explained the mixture should be separated into two baking tins and bakers should level it off.
Place the tins on the same shelf in a preheated oven and cook for around 25 minutes, or until they are even and a golden brown colour.
When the cakes are cooled, Mary spreaded jam across the top of one cake, and stated bakers have the option to add cream if desired.
Once the filling has been added, those following the recipe should add the other cake to the top.
She added: “To finish, add just a bit of caster sugar on top.
“I think this is a perfect Victoria sandwich and I know all the family are going to enjoy it.”
A Victoria sponge cake can be the perfect treat to make at home with little effort.
Mary explained this is something that can be enjoyed by all of the family.
