Rules around face coverings in England have changed quite a few times over the last 12-18 months depending on the science concerning positive coronavirus results and hospital admissions. Later this week, however, the Government are lifting some restrictions – and having to have your nose and mouth covered while shopping won’t be necessary. But for Sainsbury’s they are asking customers to stick to wearing face masks which doing their food shop in England.

England’s current rules require everyone aged 11 and over to wear face coverings in most public indoor venues and on public transport.

This includes places such as shops, hairdressers and taxis, but (unlike the rest of the UK) not pubs, cafes and restaurants, or gyms and leisure centres.

From Thursday, 27 January, face masks will not be legally required in any setting.

However, Sainsbury’s has announced they are keeping the face mask rule across all their supermarkets.

The British retailer is asking their customers to keep wearing face masks when doing their foodshop.

It comes as Sainsbury’s put in a request to its customers and staff.

MEN reported that Sainsbury’s safety “remains [their] highest priority”.

Apparently, from Thursday, the supermarket giant is “asking our customers and colleagues in England to continue to wear a face covering in our stores if they are able to”.

In Scotland and Wales, however, “face coverings remain mandatory for those who can wear them in our stores, in line with the latest Government restrictions”.

@carwash2016 commented: “Thanks so government guidance is no masks so you wouldn’t be telling people to wear them thanks for the clarification.”

Someone with the username @andystock22 remarked: “My local @sainsburys already had an announcement yesterday stating face masks were now a personal choice.”

@mmaher70 said: “Thank you @sainsburys for pushing for masks still to be worn, in their shops. This makes a safe place to shop to protect shielders, disabled people and elderly. We are the only country world not wearing masks out!”

Debbie Wood also tweeted: “@sainsburys thank you for continuing to insist on masks. I’ll be shopping with you.”

One place where face coverings are remaining a requirement is Transport for London (TfL).

As many companies are now asking their employees to return to the office – should they travel by tube, they are required to wear a face mask.

Wales and Scotland will be asking members of the public to wear face coverings when in public spaces from Thursday.
