Royal life is full of seemingly arcane rules. From the length of Prince George’s shorts to the Queen’s bedtime, being a member of the royal family means following traditions that commoners might find silly.

Those rules extend to diet as well. We already know what Queen Elizabeth eats every day and the one surprising food she’s banned the rest of her family from eating while traveling, but what about baby Sussex? Are their rules in place for what Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s new son can and can’t eat?

Though the day-to-day of the baby’s diet will be left up to his health-conscious parents, royal chefs and Palace sources have dished on the royal baby food regimen throughout the years, shedding some light on what lies ahead for baby Sussex.

Queen Elizabeth was the first member of the royal family to breastfeed her children, Today reports. Before then, wet nurses were common practice, as breastfeeding was considered improper.

Once he’s older, baby Sussex can likely look forward to dining on apples and pears from the Queen’s Sandringham estate for his first meal. Former royal chef Darren McGrady told Today that he prepared “Will and Harry’s first meals of steamed apples and pears from the Queen’s Sandringham country retreat.” McGrady, who added that the fruit needed to be pureed twice, said he expected other royal babies to have similar diets when they begin eating solid foods.

And there’s no way baby Sussex will be eating anything that comes in a package. McGrady told the Metro that among the Queen’s kitchen staff of 20-plus members, at least two were dedicated to the diets of Prince William and Prince Harry when they were babies. “One chef in the palace kitchen would puree chicken, lamb or beef and another would do the same with cooked vegetables such as peas, carrots and cauliflower,” he said.
