There is something marvellous about a perfectly creamy avocado – and the same does not go for an underripe one. DaveHax took to YouTube to share his 10-minute avocado-ripening method.

It is difficult to get the timing right when it comes to avocados. 

This is particularly annoying because this fruit is far from cheap, and they often get thrown out due to going mushy too quickly.

On the other hand, it is also common for avocado lovers to slice open one to find that they can barely get their knife through it.

Sometimes you have the time to ripen an avocado over a couple of days, however, sometimes you want to slap it on some toast or in a salad as soon as humanly possible.

If you have an under-ripe avocado, this is how to ripen one in just 10 minutes.

For “when you just don’t want to wait”, Dave instructed avocado lovers to start off with a piece of tin foil.

Next, wrap up your chosen avocado in the middle of the tin foil, tightly covering all parts of it.

Place the wrapped-up avocado in an oven dish and place it into a preheated oven. 

This should be around 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93.3 degrees Celsius). 

Dave stated: “Warming up the avocado gently releases gas which surrounds it and helps speed up the ripening process.”

After roughly 10 minutes, remove the tray from the oven – wearing an oven glove – and place the avocado on a cooling rack. The avocado should still be covered in tin foil.

Allow it to completely cool down, only removing the foil once it’s totally cool.

Carefully slice the avocado in half, remove the stone and enjoy. According to the expert, this should now be “perfect for eating”. 

However, he did warn avocado lovers that while 10 minutes is usually a good time for an avocado to ripen in the oven, it may need slightly longer depending on how hard it is to begin with.

This method will work for slightly under-ripe avocados, but not ones that are totally rock solid.

Taste of Home recommended that for the inedible avocados out there, people should grab an avo, an apple and a paper bag. 

This method could take as little as a day, but anything up to 72 hours.

Place the avocado inside of the paper bag, along with the apple.

Pierce tiny holes in the paper bag with a toothpick or pin, and leave it on a surface at room temperature.

Apples can make other fruits ripen faster in that they produce ethylene – known as the fruit ripening hormone – which speeds up the ripening of the fruit it surrounds.

You should be left with a delicious, creamy avocado ready to eat.
