According to menopause expert LesleyAnn Davies, from vitamin and supplement company Innopure, some delicious Halloween and autumn treats, such as pumpkin seeds, can help women lose menopausal weight as well as “prevent the negative symptoms”.

LesleyAnn talked to Express.co.uk about the foods women who want to lose weight fast should be consuming this autumn and recommended wheat pasta, spinach, kale and fish.

She said it is important to add wheat pasta which is “full of fibre into your diet as a healthy and filling alternative”.

“It’s also wise to add dark greens such as spinach and kale along with fish which are high in omega 3 to help maintain a healthy weight.”

In terms of seasonal foods, the experts advised women to increase their consumption of pumpkin seeds and butternut squash.

“We recommend incorporating some seasonal items within your diet, and one of the hidden superfoods to ease symptoms is pumpkin seeds,” she said.

Pumpkin seeds are high in vitamin E and “can ease one of the most frustrating side effects of menopause: dry and itchy skin”.

LesleyAnn added: “The seeds not only help to strengthen the immune system, but they’re a delicious snack once roasted.”

Another “autumn favourite” to dish up is butternut squash soup, “which is high in vitamin C and E while having low-fat content”.

“Additionally, including plenty of fibre into a diet is a further way to help prevent the common weight gain experienced during menopause,” the expert added.

Celebrity personal trainer and menopause expert Michael Fireman backed this up saying pumpkins “are full of health benefits” as they are packed with potassium which “helps you to lower blood pressure, lower your risk of stroke and increase bone mineral density, boosting your bone health”.

Pumpkins are high in fibre and low in calories, “which means they make you feel full without adding more food intake into the day”.

They are also a nutrient-rich food, “a healthy way to fill up” and “their fibre promotes digestive health, too, helping you to go more regularly,” the trainer revealed.

He also recommended having pumpkin seeds as they have tryptophan, “an amino acid that helps make a chemical called serotonin that helps you sleep”.

“As well as making you feel good, serotonin plays a huge role in promoting good quality sleep,” the trainer explained.

Another suggestion from Michael was stuffed pumpkins. Simply “slice off the top of a small pumpkin, scoop out the seeds and set it in the oven to roast,” he said. “Then, stuff with whatever delicious filling you like, whether that’s green lentils, roasted vegetables or nuts and goat’s cheese.”

LesleyAnn warned women about the negative effects of “seasonal treats” such as sweets, chocolate or spicy dishes.

“While it can be tempting to indulge in them during Halloween and Christmas, it’s best to avoid trigger foods such as spicy dishes and fatty foods to ease the side effects.

“Try to stick to a limited number of spiced curries and chocolate treats to prevent negative symptoms such as heartburn and hot flushes,” she explained.

The menopause expert added: “Selecting the right food and drink is extremely important to help reduce the negative symptoms for women going through menopause.

“As estrogen levels decline during menopause, it can often result in weight gain due to the hormonal changes.”
