Apple cider vinegar can help with weight loss because of its main active component known as acetic acid. It is an organic compound with a sour taste that is known to promote weight loss by improving the metabolism, lowering blood sugars and reducing fat storage.

It can also promote fullness which can decrease your overall calorie intake, putting your diet into a deficit. A deficit is a state your body needs to be in to lose any amount of weight and it means your body is burning more energy than you are consuming.

One recent study indicated that apple cider vinegar can help shed stubborn fat and decrease a dieters overall body weight.

In a 12 week study, 144 obese Japanese adults consumed either one tablespoon of vinegar, two tablespoons of vinegar or a placebo.

Those who consumed one tablespoon lost around 1.2kg and those who drank two tablespoons lost around 1.7kg.

Drinking apple cider vinegar can help lose weight but it should not be the only factor you add into your lifestyle to do so as results will take a while to spot.

But when is the best time to take the drink to boost weight loss results and to burn belly fat?

Research suggests that drinking apple cider vinegar before a big meal can help lose weight.

This is because it will help you to eat less of your meal. This is down to the insoluble fibre that will help you to feel full with less food.

The fibre will also decrease the likelihood of slimmers snacking throughout the day as they will not be hungry.

David Wiener, Training Specialist at Al-based fitness and lifestyle coaching app Freeletics explains how drinking it before a meal may be the best option.

He says: “By adding vinegar to a high-carb meal it has been shown to improve the body’s insulin sensitivity.”

Insulin sensitivity refers to how sensitive the body’s cells are in response to insulin.

High insulin sensitivity allows the cells of the body to use blood glucose more effectively, reducing blood sugar.

When taken before a heavy meal that consists of a lot of carbs, the vinegar can slow the rate of stomach emptying as well as preventing large sugar spikes.

A recent trend is to drink it before bed but many are left wondering whether or not this is the best time to consume the drink.

Drinking apple cider vinegar at night may also help lower blood sugar but if weight loss is your aim, experts suggest drinking throughout the day.

Some evidence suggests that drinking small amounts of apple cider vinegar before bed may help lower morning blood sugars but in terms of weight loss Healthline recommends drinking it before meals.

It should be drunk diluted in water or it can even be added to food like salads to disguise the strong taste.

Around 15ml of the condiment should be enough for slimmers to be able to see small weight loss results within a couple of weeks.

Apple cider vinegar should never be drunk straight as it is an acidic vinegar and can cause harm to tooth enamel as well as upset the stomach.
