Dr Michael Mosley often shares his weight loss tips with slimmers online as well as on television. He is the creator of The Fast 800 – a diet plan that helps people lose weight quickly.

The Fast 800 diet contains Mediterranean ingredients that are high in fibre.

Dr Mosley explained this diet is one of the “healthiest and most nutritious” on the planet.

It not only helps you lose weight – it can also protect you from viruses, such as COVID-19.

Following a healthy diet, therefore, has many health benefits.

Speaking about getting ill from Covid or other illnesses, Dr Mosley said: “Losing weight can swiftly boost your chances of recovery, and rapid weight loss via The Fast 800 has been shown to be a powerfully effective way of going about it.

“Our best defence for any virus is a fully active immune system.

“Your immune system is a complex army of cells which are there to identify and destroy any potentially dangerous invaders.

“But to do this effectively the army needs to be in the best possible condition for combat.”

Dr Mosley continued: “As we get older our immune system tends to get weaker and less effective.

“So, what can you do to keep yours in good shape and ready to take on all corners?

“One way is to bolster your microbiome, the microbes that live in your gut.

“They are central to our health, our mood, better sleep, allergy prevention, and importantly at the moment – immunity.

“Along with the gut’s ability to help manage a healthy weight, it’s clear that for long-term health, we need to start from the inside.”

Dr Mosley went on to explain which foods are best to “help boost your gut’s microbiome”.

He said: “One of the best ways to improve the good microbes that live in our guts is through eating a Mediterranean diet packed with health promoting nutrients.

“The high fibre content is a great way to supercharge your microbiome.

“The Mediterranean diet is widely seen as the healthiest, most nutrient-rich diet on the planet.”

Dr Mosley stressed that the Mediterranean diet contains plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, lentils, beans, nuts, seeds, spices, and olive oil.

Other Mediterranean ingredients include oily fish, cheese, and full-fat yoghurt.

Another diet Dr Mosley recommended following was a low-carb diet.

He said: “Not all carbs are created equal – just as there are good fats and bad fats, there are good carbs and bad carbs.

“The trick is not to cut carbs completely, but rather to be choosy about the ones you regularly eat.”

Dr Mosley recommended cutting “white bread, white pasta, potatoes and sugars, including maple syrup and agave nectar” out of your diet.

“They are easily digestible carbohydrates, meaning they are rapidly absorbed by the body, creating a big spike in your blood-sugar levels,” the doctor explained.
