British chef James Martin, who can be spotted on James Martin’s Saturday Morning, has always been open about his struggles with losing weight and maintaining a slim figure. Here’s how he shed the excess through diet and exercise.
James Martin lost a whopping five stone when appearing on Strictly Come Dancing in 2005.
His rigorous lifestyle when recording the show did wonders for his waistline, but sadly the chef found it hard to maintain.
In fact, social media trolls were quick to pull the chef up on his weight.
He stated: “I looked on social media and every comment was about me being fat.
“So I lost a stone and a half. And no doubt I’ll lose another stone on this tour,” he told The Sun in 2018.
Despite his 6ft 4in frame, he didn’t feel comfortable in his skin.
He explained that while being on TV didn’t do wonders for his self-esteem, it prompted him to shed his excess weight.
“I’ve lost a stone-ish. I just think it’s a lifestyle thing and also looking at yourself on TV.”
Speaking at the Chelsea Flower Show, he said: “I don’t really watch the programmes that I do because you get critical of yourself.
“You kind of watch and go, ‘Oh God there’s a bit of a chin happening there.’
“And everybody’s TVs are bigger now. Before you used to watch TV on a small one and now they’re massive,” he told the Daily Mail.
But what was his weight loss secret?
Obviously a great lover of food and cooking, James uses a lot of decadent ingredients, such as butter, in his everyday life.
Talking about weight gain, he stated: “It’s not the butter consumption.
“It’s the ready-made food, it’s the packet food, the hidden salt, hidden fat – that’s the problem in this country.
“It’s not the butter in a butter block, or butter you put on your toast.
“It’s the fact that not as many people cook in the UK as they do in France or Italy or Spain,” he told The Herald.
Far from banishing it, the chef even wrote a book entitled Butter, containing more than 130 recipes, for all lovers of the stuff.
Fans have commented on his slim frame, with the star tweeting: “Haha thanks all. Lost 14 kilos (2st 3lb) got to get new clothes.”
But for the “big bloke” it wasn’t an easy feat: “So I’ve really got to watch what I eat and drink, and make sure I exercise regularly.”
