Weight loss can be achieved by eating a healthy diet and taking part in regular exercise. It is thought that apple cider vinegar (ACV) can help speed up results for some slimmers. This is how much you should take.

How does it work?

Apple cider vinegar is an acidic drink that helps dieters lose weight, according to some studies.

One study published in the US National Library of Medicine tried it out on 144 obese adults.

Those who had one tablespoon a day dropped 2.6 pounds over a 12 week period and those who had two lost 3.7 pounds during the same time period.

Another study shows those who drank ACV with a high-carb meal consumed 200 to 275 fewer calories a day.

While it is not known exactly how it works, some studies have given an indication, nutritionist Lily Soutter said.

She explained: “Studies show that enjoying a daily dose of apple cider vinegar alongside a balanced diet may help you to reach your weight loss goals.

“This may be due to apple cider vinegar’s rich content of acetic acid which is responsible for its characteristic tangy flavour.

“Whilst it is not yet fully understood why this happens, it is thought that acetic acid may stimulate a pathway which reduces the storage of fat, whilst increasing the rate at which the body burns fat.

“This may help you to achieve a healthy weight.”

How much should you have?

Having just one or two tablespoons a day could be enough to notice the benefits, Lily continued.

She said: “By consuming 15ml to 30ml of apple cider vinegar per day in a diluted format, you can achieve health outcomes, as seen in clinical trials, such as weight loss, blood glucose control and improved cardiovascular health.

“There is strong evidence that shows up to one to two tablespoons at each meal is safe and this remains the recommended daily consumption for apple cider vinegar.”

How do you take it?

If having one or two tablespoons a day, dieters have some flexibility on how they take it.

The condiment can be added to water, mixed into a salad dressing or added to a drink.

The expert added: “Apple cider vinegar can make a tasty addition to an overall healthy balanced diet and lifestyle and can be enjoyed as part of a daily morning ritual.

“To drink, mix one part (20ml or one tablespoon) of ACV with nine parts (180ml) of still, sparkling or warm water.

“You can also use ACV in salad dressings, smoothies, sorbets, within your cooking and even to make delicious mocktails.”
