Lemon has a range of helpful purposes, but can it really help you to lose weight?According to experts like registered nutritionist Rhiannon Lambert it can’t, she explained that: “No, adding lemon juice to coffee doesn’t aid weight loss in any way.

The latest weight loss trend – drinking ‘lemon coffee’ – is said to make shedding extra pounds even easier.

A number of TikTok users have claimed that adding lemon juice to black coffee can create a fat burning drink, but can coffee and lemon really burn through fat?

According to experts like registered nutritionist Rhiannon Lambert it can’t, she explained that: “No, adding lemon juice to coffee doesn’t aid weight loss in any way.

“Many people are getting sucked into the ‘superfood’ detox industry. The idea that you can flush your system of impurities, leaving you squeaky clean and raring to go is a scam.”

While adding lemon to coffee can’t aid weight loss, Rhiannon did reveal that adding lemon to hot water can offer benefits.

She said: “It’s true that adding lemon juice to water can have potential benefits, from promoting hydration to increasing satiety.

“However, it’s important to know that these benefits all come from the water! Lemon juice contains nutrients such as vitamin C and antioxidants, but in a typical drink (e.g. one to two tablespoons) there is nowhere near enough to warrant any claims and most unlikely to have any effects on your weight.”

She explained: “What may work for one person, might even result in the opposite effect for someone else,” she continues.
“Both lemon and coffee have proven benefits but mixing them together does not translate into even stronger effects.”

“The active ingredient in coffee is of course caffeine, which is a stimulant and the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance. It works by stimulating the brain and central nervous system helping you to stay alert. Once consumed, caffeine is quickly absorbed from the gut into the bloodstream. It then travels to the liver and is broken down into compounds that can affect the function of various organs.

“However, the brain is most affected by caffeine. There are a few benefits to drinking coffee, these could include, enhancing brain function and performance and lower risk of depression by limiting your mood. However, coffee can disrupt sleep and cause anxiety for many.

Holistic health coach and nutrition trainer Heidi Hauer agrees, and said: “First, let’s not trick ourselves into believing there is one magic drink for weight loss. This simply doesn’t exist.

“The most effective and sustainable way to drop pounds is to look at your diet and lifestyle in a holistic way. Instead of putting all your hopes on one drink, focus on reducing sugar in your diet, increasing the amount of vegetables, especially green ones, moving regularly, reducing stress, etc.”

Heidi also explained that when it comes to weight loss, there’s no set approach – everyone sees different results from different approaches.

She explained: “What may work for one person, might even result in the opposite effect for someone else,’ she continues.

“Both lemon and coffee have proven benefits but mixing them together does not translate into even stronger effects.’

While hot water with lemon may offer some benefits, experts have warned that the drink may cause tooth damage due to the acidity of the fruit juice.

Adding caffeine to the mix when making a lemon coffee could make the dental damage even more serious.

Rhiannon explained that: “Coffee is actually quite the complex drink, and its health effects are controversial.

“There is no benefit in combining lemon and coffee. It’s not harmful, but if you suffer from acid reflux adding lemon juice cause makes this worse.”

Because of its acidity, Heidi does not recommend drinking coffee on an empty stomach and instead explained “It’s better to enjoy a cup with or after breakfast,” she says. “It’s also important to note that coffee interferes with nutrient absorption of essential minerals and B vitamins. Consume it in moderation.”

She said: “Drinking low calorie, caffeine-free drinks like water and herbal teas are helpful and lemon water on its own is great, but not in isolation and certainly not mixed into coffee,” she tells us.

Camilla Gray, nutritional therapist at Optibac Probiotics agreed that adding lemon juice to your coffee would not benefit weight loss in any way.

She said: “Drinking low calorie, caffeine-free drinks like water and herbal teas are helpful and lemon water on its own is great, but not in isolation and certainly not mixed into coffee,’ she tells us.

“It is documented that caffeine can block the absorption of some vitamins and minerals, so although not harmful, you may not be absorbing nutrients from the lemon juice at all.

“Anyone drinking very acidic drinks every morning should be cautious, as it may damage the tooth enamel if done for an extended period of time.
“I’d always advise that if you are drinking acidic drinks, consume them after you have brushed your teeth.”
