Pesto is a paste that traditionally consists of crushed garlic, pine nuts, coarse salt, basil leaves and hard cheese such, all blended together with olive oil.

The flavoursome Italian sauce can be found in supermarket jars across the globe, but it’s also very easy to make at home.

BBC Good Food’s classic pesto takes just 15 minutes to cook so won’t leave you holed up in the kitchen for hours this weekend.

It also contains just five ingredients so won’t break the bank or require hours of traipsing around the shops.

BBC Good Food gave this one-step recipe a difficulty rating of “easy”, so it’s perfect for those hosting young kids or grandkids this weekend.

The food media platform said: “Whizz up a homemade pesto in under 15 minutes using just five ingredients. This herby Italian-style sauce is great stirred through pasta for a quick meal.”

But the versatile paste doesn’t just pair with pasta. Hello Little Home suggested trying it with dipping bread, raw or cooked veggies, or mixing it with sour cream, Greek yogurt, cream cheese or goat cheese to make a “yummy” spread.

BBC Good Food’s recipe makes 250ml pesto sauce and is around 88 calories per tablespoon.

Ingredients

50g pine nuts

80g basil

50g parmesan or vegetarian alternative

150ml olive oil

Two garlic cloves

Method

1. Heat a small frying pan over a low heat. Place the pine nuts in the pan and cook until golden, shaking occasionally. Pop the cooked pine nuts into a food processor along with the basil, parmesan, olive oil and garlic cloves. Whizz together until smooth. Season to taste. Enjoy!

BBC Good Food said: “This will keep in the fridge for about a week. Pour a thin layer over the surface of the pesto before refrigerating to prevent it going brown. It can also be frozen.”
