Guinness and whiskey are two of the most iconic Irish beverages but they’re not just to be enjoyed as drinks. The team at Beanies have shared their three best recipes to make for St Patrick’s Day – including a hearty meat stew and fruit apple tart. Here’s everything you need to whip them up from scratch.
St. Patrick’s Day is the feast day of St. Patrick, a patron saint of Ireland which is celebrated by many with pints of Guinness and other pub classics like Whiskey.
If you can’t get to the pub to mark the occasion, the team at Beanies have shared three flavoursome recipes you can make in the comfort of your own home.
The Beanies team said: “There is nothing more heart-warming and comforting than an Irish stew, and St Patrick’s Day is the perfect day to make the most of this meal.
“Traditionally made with lamb, this meal can also be prepared with beef. And while it doesn’t traditionally involve alcohol, it can include Guinness to help deepen the flavour of the beef.”
- One pound (lbs) of beef
- One cup of Guinness
- Four cups of broth, beef or vegetable
- One tablespoon of tomato paste
- Six cloves of garlic
- One large onion, chopped
- Four carrots, chopped
- Two celery sticks, chopped
- Three bay leaves
- One tablespoon of flour, to thicken
For a thicker stew, you can either reduce the amount of liquid, increase the flour, add cornstarch, or increase the meat and vegetable volume. For a thinner consistency, increase the liquid content and consider playing around with the broth-to-alcohol ratio.
They said: “Although it is recommended that you use chuck beef, you could use any beef available. Even the toughest beef can be melt-in-your-mouth as this cooking process can be low and slow, including being done in a slow cooker. Simply brown off your meat and leave all the ingredients in the slow cooker, with a perfect stew ready in a few hours.”

Whiskey apple tart
If you’re looking for a sweet treat this apple tart is perfect for St Patrick’s Day.
Made with a “good helping of Irish whiskey”, the Beanies team noted that results are worth it” even though it takes one hour and a half to make.
- 1.5kg cooking apples
- 100ml Irish whiskey
- 200g sultana
- 250g demerara sugar
- One cinnamon stick
- One egg, beaten
- A splash of milk
- A small knob of butter
- Shortcrust pastry
Start by combining the sultanas, some sugar, and whiskey in a pan on medium heat and mix thoroughly. Leave to cool while cooking the apples in a separate pan along with some whiskey, 125g demerara sugar and a cinnamon stick.
When the apples are soft, strain them and set them aside. Once the filling is complete, roll the pastry into the thickness of a £1 coin. Pierce with a fork and blind bake for ten minutes.
At this point, you can coat it in the egg and milk mixture before returning to the oven for a further five minutes. Complete this step twice, then add the apple and sultana mixture to the pastry.
Be sure to strain any of the whiskey that the sultanas haven’t soaked up to avoid soggy pastry. Add the lid of the pastry, egg wash, and return to the oven for 20 minutes, ensuring there are steam holes in the lid.
Whipped Irish cream
Perfect for almost any pudding, this Irish whipped cream is especially tasty when paired with the whiskey apple tart.
The Beanies team said: “Irish cream is a delicious, alcoholic drink that can add creaminess to your recipes. But did you know that you can actually whip it up enough to make it a brilliant icing for decorating your cakes, from cupcakes to cheesecakes?
“Add a mixture of Irish cream, whipping cream and sugar into a bowl and mix until peaks form.”
Serve your pudding with a good shot of whiskey and the cream topping for the ultimate St Patrick’s Day feast.
