French toast is loved for its sweet glazed texture and fruity toppings, though it can also be enjoyed as a savoury dish.

While traditional recipes call for costly brioche and buttermilk, a health-conscious TikTok chef has shared an alternative.

Taking to the social media app to demonstrate the easy recipe, @jalalsamfit claimed that it is “the perfect breakfast”.

He said: “My healthy French toast tastes amazing and makes eating healthy so much easier.”

And all that’s needed is a handful of affordable ingredients, including wholemeal bread and eggs.

Start by pouring all of the ingredients into a large mixing bowl and stir well until they are all combined.

The TikTok chef recommended doing this until bubbles start to form on the surface of the liquid.

This will form the glaze used to soak the slices of bread so it’s important to get it right for the best results after cooking.

Once the liquid mixture is ready, dip the slices into the bowl and allow them to soak it all up for a few minutes.

Prepare a hot frying pan with a few sprays of low-calorie cooking oil or spray before placing the soaked bread slices flat in the centre.

Cook for two minutes on one side before flipping over to repeat on the other side to get a “nice crispy crust”, as put by the TikTok chef.

Once cooked, stack the bread up and slice down the middle into two halves. Pour over some fresh fruit such as strawberries and blueberries, then drizzle with zero-sugar maple syrup.

The healthy recipe creator claimed that the whole meal amounts to approximately 500 calories which is less than the average recipe.
